Pileggi Announces Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program Deadline Extended to End of the Year

The deadline to apply for Pennsylvania's Property Tax and Rent Rebate program has been extended from June 30 to December 31, 2008, according to Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9).

"This program provides crucial assistance to many low-income homeowners and renters," said Senator Pileggi. "I urge anyone who is eligible to apply today."

The Property Tax and Rent Rebate program provides property tax relief or rent assistance for Pennsylvanians who are 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and those 18 or older who are disabled. Annual household income may not exceed $35,000, although only half of any Social Security income and railroad retirement benefits count towards calculation.

In 2006, the Pennsylvania legislature expanded the Property Tax and Rent Rebate program to make more Pennsylvania residents eligible and to increase the amount of available rebates. Under the expanded program, a homeowner or renter can receive a rebate of up to $650.

As of May 30, the Department of Revenue has received more than 515,000 Property Tax and Rent Rebate applications. Rebate checks for those individuals will be distributed starting on July 1. Future rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed.

Constituents may call Senator Pileggi's district office, toll free, at 1-888-984-3478 for help regarding the Property Tax and Rent Rebate program. Applications and additional information are available at www.PaPropertyTaxRelief.com
