Pileggi Announces Availability of Heating Assistance for 2006-07 Winter Months

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

State Senator Dominic F. Pileggi (R-9) announced today that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will begin accepting applications on November 6, 2006.

"In the cold winter months, no family should go without heat," Pileggi said. "Heating costs are expected to be very high this year, but efforts to reduce costs and maintain a comfortable home may not be enough, particularly for those with older family members or young children in their homes.  Families with limited incomes may be eligible for assistance from LIHEAP."

LIHEAP provides weatherization help, and grants for those with broken heating equipment, leaking lines, a fuel shortage, or the threat of utility service termination.

This year, up to 67,000 additional households will be eligible for LIHEAP assistance. On September 18, 2006, the income eligibility was raised from 135% to 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.

Single individuals may now qualify for assistance if they earn less than $14,700 annually, up from $12,920 last year.  A household of two may qualify if their combined annual income does not exceed $19,800; a household of four, $30,000; and a household of five, $35,100.

Please call the LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095 to apply, or contact your local county assistance office.  In Delaware County, the number is (610)447-3099.  Chester County residents should call (610)466-1042.  Those who wish to apply online may visit the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Access to Social Services (COMPASS) website at www.compass.state.pa.us.

Senator Pileggi added that in addition to LIHEAP many utility companies have their own assistance plans. Interested customers should check with their individual heating fuel and electricity supplier for more information.
