Free Application For Student Aid (FASFA) Available

Senator Dominic F. Pileggi is pleased to announce that copies of the 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) are available in his district offices.

FASFA is the form that determines eligibility for almost all types of federal, state and institutional student aid, including the Pennsylvania State Grant.

Families are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to ensure that all student aid deadlines are met.

Tax information is required from students and parents, so families should either file their taxes prior to completing the FAFSA or submit their FAFSA based on 2006 estimate tax information, according to Senator Pileggi. Students with access to the internet may file their FASFA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

"Filing a FAFSA is the first step in applying for financial assistance to pursue a higher education," Pileggi said. "The FAFSA is the only application that students must file to apply for a Pennsylvania State Grant for the 2007-08 academic year."

The application filing deadline for all students seeking to renew State Grant aid regardless of program of study, and all other applicants for Bachelor degree programs including those enrolling in college transfer programs is May 1, 2007.

The application filing deadline for all first time applicants for State Grant aid who plan to enroll in business, trade or technical schools, hospital schools of nursing or two year non-transferable programs at community, junior or four-year colleges is August 1, 2007.

Pileggi said students and parents may receive assistance when filling out the forms by calling a toll-free hotline: 1-800-433-3243.

"Applying for financial assistance can be a complicated, frustrating process, and missing a deadline or filling out a form incorrectly can mean the difference between receiving a grant or loan, or missing out," said Pileggi. "The hotline is a great opportunity to get some free help from experts."
