FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Senator Pileggi Re-Elected Majority LeaderSenator Dominic Pileggi (R-9) today was re-elected by his colleagues to serve as Majority Leader for the 2009-10 legislative session. "Having the support of my caucus to serve another session as Leader is an honor," Senator Pileggi said. "We accomplished a lot in the current session, including making fundamental changes to how the Senate operates which give the public much easier access to Senate votes and debates. "We also passed a strong new Open Records Law, created the Alternative Energy Investment Fund to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, reformed the mortgage lending process, created a fund to improve water and sewer systems in communities across the state, controlled the growth of state spending, and enacted the Clean Indoor Air Act to prevent smoking in most public places." The top issues in 2009, Senator Pileggi said, will be passing the 2009-10 state budget at a time when Pennsylvania and the nation are experiencing serious economic difficulties, ensuring that Pennsylvania's transportation needs – roads, bridges, and mass transit – are properly funded, reducing property taxes, and addressing the upcoming removal of rate caps on electricity prices. As Majority Leader, Senator Pileggi's duties include overseeing the legislative agenda, developing policies and strategies for the Senate Republican Caucus, and playing a key role in floor debates. He also plays a major role in negotiating many issues with the administration and the House of Representatives. Senator Pileggi was first elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in a special election held in October 2002. Prior to his election to the Senate, Senator Pileggi served as Mayor of the City of Chester.
