Senator Pileggi Congratulates David L. Herr of Parkesburg for Century Farm Certification

Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) congratulated David L. Herr of Highland Township, Chester County, when Herrwood Farm was recently certified as a Century Farm by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

"This is a remarkable achievement, and a real tribute to Mr. Herr and his family," said Sen. Pileggi. "Pennsylvania's economy depends on the hard work done by farmers, and farms that have been in the same family for more than 100 years are the cornerstone of agriculture in our state."

To be accepted into the Century Farm Program, a farm must have been owned by the same family for at least 100 years, at least one family member must live on the farm on a permanent basis, and the farm also must meet a minimum size or income threshold.

The 92.9-acre Herrwood Farm was originally purchased by Mr. Herr's grandfather, Abraham M. Herr, in 1903. The farm produces crops, pigs, steers, chickens and eggs. The farm’s original house, built in the 1800s and expanded in 1922, is still in use along with the original barn and several original outbuildings.
