Senator Pileggi Responds to PHMC Announcement Regarding
Brandywine Battlefield Park
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission recently announced, without
any advance notice, that Brandywine Battlefield Park will close as of
Friday, August 14, at 5 p.m.
Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi made the following comments in response to
the Commission's announcement:
"I am very
disappointed in the actions of the Historical and Museum Commission.
Brandywine Battlefield Park is an important historic and cultural asset for
Pennsylvania. It deserves to be treated with more respect than it is being
given by the Commission.
"The
Commission made this decision unilaterally, without consulting Chadds Ford
Township, Brandywine Battlefield Associates, or any of the elected officials
who represent this community – despite a previous commitment that the
township would be given 30 days notice.
"Since a
public hearing was held in May, the township and my office have been working
with the Commission on a long-term solution for Brandywine Battlefield Park,
and it is both inexplicable and inexcusable that they took this action so
abruptly.
"Today, I
shared with the Commission a plan from Chadds Ford Township to keep the
Battlefield Park open with no visible change in daily operations, and at no
additional cost to the Commission. I hope the Commission quickly approves
that approach while discussions continue on a viable long-term solution."
