Senator Pileggi's 2007 Student Leadership Forum

On Friday April 27, 2007, I hosted my fourth annual Student Leadership Forum titled "Student Guide to State Government - A Closer Look."

The leadership forum brought together over 100 students from across the 9th Senatorial District with state legislators, state officials and lobbyists.

Students had the opportunity to attend two breakout sessions; Understanding the Legislative Process and one session of their own choosing. Students chose from topics including Crime and Punishment, Education, and Health and Welfare.

The event was an overwhelming success, as you will see in the photographs below.

My staff and I look forward to next year’s event.

Senator Pileggi and Dr. James T. Harris, President of Widener University welcomed the students to Widener University, in Chester. Both Senator Pileggi and Dr. Harris emphasized the value of higher education.

During the Crime and Punishment breakout session, students discussed the state criminal justice system as well as crime and its effect on society. Students were particularly interested in gun control legislation.

The cost of basic and high education, increased graduation requirements and state standardized testing were among the most discussed topics during the Education breakout session.

During the Understanding the Legislative Process portion of the program, students simulated the process of moving a piece of legislation from an idea into a law.
